Your two areas of interest when hiring a writer are (1) quality and (2) price. You want someone that draws upon his/her expertise to create stellar materials while offering tremendous flexibility in the price you are charged…so that it fits into your budget. In a nutshell, it’s not about money. It’s about making sure you receive the greatest return on your investment by working with someone who views the relationships as a partnership.

Here is a quick list of the what I can provide and a little informational blurb for each.

Articles. I write only 100% original content and pretty much on any topic. These can be from 250 to 500+ words and include articles for posting on web sites, article submission sites, blogs and sent via email. Sample 1 | Sample 2 | Sample 3 | Sample 4 | Sample 5

Blog posts. These are also 100% original. You simply provide a topic (or I can come up with one based upon your message) and the content is done and uploaded. If you want to see samples, click any of the links shown at the right, or click any of these links: Sample 1 | Sample 2 | Sample 3 | Sample 4 | Sample 5

Press Releases. Again, you receive 100% original content. Each press release includes the typical general information plus quotes and contact information. They run approximately 300-400 words and they can be distributed for you, utilizing both free and paid organizations.

Newsletters. Because most people have no idea what to say to their readers and/or how to make money by marketing complimentary projects in their newsletters, we prepare either ezines (online) and/or traditional (printed) newsletter materials.

eBooks. There are a lot of great ideas out there and the novice writer has no idea how to create something that is really going to pack a lot of punch. I can start from scratch with your idea, or review what you have and taking it to the next level. I also providing proofing and editing services.

Freebies. If you have a web site and you want to give away a free report, I will help you develop something that’s short, sweet and to the point.

User Manuals. If you’re seeking a technical writer to produce a software user manual for your application, I’m your girl. I’ve been a technical writer since 1980 and have “been there, done that” when it comes to ”how to use” materials. Sample 1

Presentations. People seem to have a block when it comes to working with PowerPoint. Their ideas don’t seem to get off the page. The trick with PowerPoint is have an outline in mind and it grows from there. Let us build you one to use for a “real world” presentation or to automatically run on a web site.

Virtual Assistance. Have you found that you have more than just writing needs? Perhaps you need someone to help setting up and/or managing your blog, troubleshooting some technical things, or want helping managing a project(s). We can also bring our knowledge to you in this regard, allow you to focus on what’s most important in your business.

Whew! Bet you had no idea there could be so much to cover – and that’s only a partial list.

Why not send us an email and tell us about your needs. Sharing advice is always free and, if nothing else, we would love to hear about what you’re working on!

I love to attend seminars. I view them not only as an educational opportunity, but also a chance to get away from the world and be with others.

While most of the seminars I attend (and it makes no difference if they are 1 day or 5 days, there are always certain things I look for to make it worthwhile for me, and the best use of my money.

Does the seminar offer a variety of choices? I have been to a few seminars where it was the same people saying the same things across the months/years. Sure: they may tweak what they say a bit – and update it for what’s new – but it’s still the same thing. When this is not worth my dollars is when there are no other classes during the same time period that I can take. This because lost money in my book.

Who are the speakers? If the conference promoter has done his/her job, the choice of speakers will have a well-balanced presence. I’ve been to both seminars where speakers were horrid and speakers were fantastic. Unfortunately, the downfall for the speakers who are bad is that they usually isolate themselves from the participants. I have a friend who’s a professional speaker and he ALWAYS makes himself reachable by the attendees. He makes it easy for the attendees to reach him after the fact. (He creates an email just for the event so he has some control over who he hears from and what he responds to.)

Do you believe the content was the key? Anyone can read from a Powerpoint presentation. A good speaker, however, only uses a PowerPoint as a means to keep him/herself on track – not as the all encompassing presentation. In addition, I have seen some speakers who won’t share their PowerPoints. Why not? This is someone – in my opinion – who doesn’t want to keep the knowledge moving forward. (I gave up worrying about people stealing my stuff a long time ago. Haven’t it doesn’t mean someone else can do anything with it – even a competitor.)

Can you really interact with others? I went to a week-long seminar where I did nothing but run from presenatation to presentation. Granted, it was a huge event – over 10,000 people – but there was literally no time to talk to anyone, let along find someone in a huge room after you met them the first time. (This is where business cards come in.) Now I stick to smaller events – under 1,000 people with 500 being the preferred number. I also make sure I’ve established contact with someone before I go so that I’ll have a “buddy” to hook up with. (With that said, I don’t recommend you share a room with someone you’ve never met. I have the experience from h*ll with someone the first time I did this and I swore never again. I’ll eat the cost of having the room to myself just to avoid doing through that agagin.)

How is the venue comfortable? Those hard conference chairs are killer. I did attend a seminar where they had nice office-type chairs. However, they were so narrow that even semi-skinny folks could not comfortably sit in them. (If they had offered those chairs without arms, they would have been fantastic.) I understand the person holding the conference has limited choices, but they always have the choice to find a new venue.

Is the price of food reasonable? Have you looked at hotel food prices lately. HOLY COW! $16.95 for a buffet lunch that isn’t worth more than $8.95? It doesn’t help that most people typically don’t have a car to drive someplace else so they are simply stuck at the venue. There has to be a better way to take care of this. I’m at a loss, however, and I’ve been a conference director!

Would you come back again? For a while, I was attending a semi-annual event. However, I found after 4 times, it just wasn’t effective any longer. Sure: I loved the people and the speakers were great. But it was the same thing with only minor changes. One of the only reasons i attended this event is because it was in the major city where I live and it was very cost-effective. But, now it comes down to a matter of the best use of my time – and this event is no longer it. I am now on the hunt for another event that I can sink my teeth into.

When you download and save a LOT of information, it’s important to know what the information is about at quick glance. Obviously, the people who name some of their PDF or ZIP files have no clue.

I have to assume that the reason(s) they don’t name their files to achieve this is goal is because…

They aren’t sure how to name the file when generating a PDF or creating the ZIP; and/or

They aren’t paying attention and just accept the default given.

In addition, not putting your name is a mistake as well. I would say that 99% of the files I get do not have a name in the title. If there were a name in the title, I could at least sort my array of files by creator. This is helpful to me since I have a tendency to follow a few people regularly and would like to keep all their files together. Yes I know: why don’t I just make a folder for them on my computer and save the file into that folder. Sure: I can do that – but what about those “miscellaneous” files that I really don’t associate with someone? Again, with a name on them I would be able to identify them easier.

Here is what I think needs to happen:

First, the title of the ebook, article, etc. should be the same as the file name. I have an article that I made into a PDF file. The name of the Word .docx file is, “Decluttering-for-Dollars-5-Ways-Turn-Into-Clutter-Cash.docx.” I have used a hyphen (-) to separate the words so it reads like a sentence (since when I save the Word file, it saves it with spaces.) Now when I create the PDF file, it automatically names it the same as the MS Word .doc file.

Next, the name should be unique. Adding your name or web site name will do that. However, if you use something generic such as, “List Building for Bloggers,” that could mean anything and be from anyone. I would bet I have 10 files that all have some version of that name – all from different people.

Finally, the title should really say something about the contents. Using my example above, it’s pretty clear what my Decluttering for Dollars book is about. It also uses the marketing tricks that make someone want to read it such as “5 Ways …” or “…Cash” (which is a big draw). I am going to be far more inclined to read something like this than something that is named, “Clutter Money” or something along those lines.

If you’re someone who produces eBooks, eGuides, etc. in PDF or ZIP form, learn how to name your files both from a technical and easily identifiable standpoint. You’re sure to get a lot more “I have to read this” and a lot less “Toss this into the recycle bin” action!

In doing some research, I came across this information from the Nielsen company (the people who do the TV rankings).

Here is the link to the site that contains the explanation and graphic: http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/consumer/countdown-to-product-launch-12-key-steps/

As I looked at this wheel, I realized how any small business – such as mine and many others – could use this same approach. Here is my take as it relates to my business.

What is that I’m offering that sets me apart from everyone else? For my business, it’s the affordability of my services. That doesn’t mean I’m cheap (quite the contrary). It means (as my tag line says) “Experience = Less Time, Less Money.”

What gets me noticed over someone else? It’s my visual image along with the manner in which I present myself.

How does my message match up with my target audience? I have to make sure that the outcome I want from the ideal client matches up with the message I’m sending out. (I don’t want to be selling widgets and have the end result be customers who want to buy mattresses.)

How am I telling the world what I really do? I try not to talk in circles (LOL!), but when I do, it’s generally because I haven’t identified my audience clearly.

Do people want what I’m selling? There’s a difference between wanting something and needing something. People may want a sports car but all they need is a mode of transportation (plane, train, or automobile).

What makes what I do better? This is the type of service I provide (very broad) with a lot of experience (20+ years) and a great sample portfolio (because no one is going to buy that car without looking at it).

Am I worth the investment? I am 100% sure I am and I find it easy to show that value to the customer. Again, lots of samples and lots of references.

Can I show my value even for deliverables that are outside my realm? Absolutely! I am not a graphic designer. However, I work with someone who is. What I offer is to manage this part of the process so the client is only dealing with me.

Where am I in the online world? This is where Internet marking comes into play. I have to be all the places I need to be – or all the rest doesn’t matter. Maybe that’s Adwords, maybe it’s SEO, or it could be word-of-mouth. None of these should be exclusive; they must work in unison.

Are my prices competitive for what I’m offering? I do know this to be true. I have a lot of experience in this field and that’s why I continually beat out my competitors when it comes to price.

Do I keep my promises? There is always something that might happen (and sometimes does). I am able to draw upon my experience to handle these hiccups – and keep the customer happy and wanting more.

Can I keep them coming back? I had a core group of 6 major corporations as clients for over 6 years. One business went under. Two opted to hire someone full time. One went away for several years and came back. One has consistently, but sporadically, used me for years. The last one has stayed by my side non-stop for over half my years in business.

I think this is a good checklist for any solopreneur to use. You must be able to address all 12 areas or you risk not having the success you hoped.

how can I help you be successful today?

When it comes to the best 50 careers in 2011, I was pleasantly surprised to find that technical writing is on the list.

Back in 1999 when I launched Affordable Words, my focus was 100% as a technical writer for software applications and policies/procedures. I wrote user guides, developed online help systems, created training materials, and produced policy/procedure information. (I do not write anything related to hardware: e.g., how you assemble it, how it works, etc.).

To this day, that education process via documentation is still my passion. (My husband has always said the Affordable Words was “magic” in our lives.)

Over the past 6 years, the type of work technical writers do has changed. In fact, it’s grown substantially. This is great news for those of us with years of experience and a substantial technical aptitude. This resurgence has once again opened up this field.

The #1 thing you must know about technical writing and technical writers is that EXPERIENCE is what’s required. A college degree gives someone the skills at a very basic level, but the maturity and and ability to work in an engineering development environment comes from working “in the trenches.” (They simply cannot teach that in school.) For example, I am certified as a Paralegal and Interior Design. However, while obtaining those certifications (from 1979 to 1981), my apparent affinity for technical writing surfaced. (I have been a creative writer from the time I was very little – and still am today). Having 30+ years of experience has allowed and does allow me to be a much better option for customers who need it done now and need it done right!

The types of software applications on the market today are far more than the traditional client-desktop. There is the web, mobile devices and the list goes on. To be successful in those arenas, the technical writer must have a solid foundation to draw upon – otherwise the learning curve is going to become overwhelming (and the work will suffer).

So, what is the message in all this? That no matter how far we advance technologically, the need for technical writers is always going to be there. And those with a solid background of skills honed before the technological age have a lot more to offer!

In a previous post about using your money wisely, I touched on this subject. For those of you who know me – or know of me – you know how passionate I am. I like to think of it as one of my better qualities. So, when I get on the band wagon about something, I really shoot off down the path. This is one bandwagon I felt I needed to revisit to really make this point hit home.

What is a Guarantee?

According to Dictionary.com, a guarantee is “something that assures a particular outcome or condition“. Now, I’ve been looking at a lot of web sites and there seem to be two things that I’m finding:

There is the implication that if you do x, y, or z, you will have a similar outcome as the person making the offer.

There is an offered guarantee that allows you to ask for your money back.

What do you think of when you see these phrases?

I promise you..

I can assure you…

I am confident…

If you were talking with a friend, and he/she said, “I promise you that I will do [whatever]“, you 100% expect that person to fulfill his/her promise, correct? If someone assures you that something will/will not happen, etc., don’t you truly believe what they say is/is not going to happen because you trust them, etc.? When you have confidence in another person, aren’t you are putting your faith in him/her that the result will be in your best interest?

Prior to the web, people valued each other…whether it be a friend, customer, etc. Maybe they did this since (a) it was the right thing to do because of their morals/values; and/or (b) they didn’t want to fail someone and have face this person about this failure.

In the real world (e.g., stores, TV, etc.), we are not as trusting about what we see/hear. For example, let’s look at infomercials. They generally make huge promises (firmer skin, fancy cars, kitchen gadgets to save time, etc.); however, you don’t just run off and buy everything you see, right? That’s because you are skeptical about the validity of the item (“It has to be too good to be true!”) and/or the return policy. If you wouldn’t spend your money on an infomercial product, then why would you spend it for something online? Aren’t they the same thing?

The Implied Outcome

When there is no face-to-face exchange about what is going to happen and the outcome, the seller has nothing to lose if you don’t succeed. [Note: This does not apply to business that have store fronts - e.g., bookstore, restaurant, etc. This applies only to those who are SELLING ONE-OFF PRODUCTS VIA THE WEB such as eBooks, a teleseminar programs, etc.] The seller’s goal is to make money and, once you’ve made the purchase, you’re on your own.

This is the #1 reason I do not sell affiliate products – or rarely sell them. I feel if you buy something I recommend, I would be horrified if you weren’t happy. This is why I don’t have an affiliate product: I want to be the person who stands behind the product and makes the guarantee.

The Guaranteed Outcome

When a web site says you will get your money back without any questions, this is a HUGE RED FLAG. Even Amazon.com doesn’t do this. If you want to return an item, you have to provide a reason – and that reason determines if you get your shipping cost back or not.

In the online world, it doesn’t work this way. In most cases, you send an email about the fact you’re unhappy, and the money appears (hopefully) back into your account. Does the seller care? Probably not. Does the seller go broke doing this? Probably not. The only person who gets screwed in this situation is you! You’ve spent your money, taken your time, and made a good faith attempt to find the pot of the gold at the end of your rainbow. When you don’t find it, you want more than just a “here’s your money back.” You want to know what happened? Did you do it wrong? Is there something you should have done differently? Can you get more help? Yet, without the face-to-face interaction, there is no one for you to hold accountable or can take responsibility for what happened.

You Get What You Pay For

If someone is claiming they made large amounts of money doing something, yet are selling you something (commonly, an eBook) for $17, $27, or $47, how much value (and confidence) does that give you in what they’re selling? Most worthwhile opportunities (even Avon, for example), ask you to make an investment upfront. This might be cash ($100+ is common) or a combination of cash and product. etc.

Look at these two scenarios:

You buy a $17 ebook. How much after-purchase attention do you think you’ll get from the seller?

You buy a $199 package that includes this same ebook, some free resources, a purchaser-only online forum, and a free call to participate in /listen to. How much after-purchase attention are you getting from this seller?

Obviously, #2 is going to give you far more value for your money. Plus, it makes the seller an invested stakeholder in your success. That’s pretty darn close to a guarantee in my opinion.

If the Web Didn’t Exist

In a nutshell (or maybe a coconut), if you saw a certain product in the “real world,” would you buy it? Is it something that you really need and will absolutely change your life for the better? Are you 100% certain you will see the rewards from this purchase fairly quickly and without a bunch of other factors? If you really don’t know the answers, then listen to the little voice in your head and, if it just doesn’t look/sound right, don’t get it.

How can I help you be successful today?

There seems to be a trend in my focus these days regarding business. It’s all about money. In the research I’ve done, I’ve found that how you manage money in your non-business life really runs in parallel with your business life. Here are few points of interest.

Impulse Purchases

I’ve talked before about shiny ring syndrome. In our hunt to find out everything we can about everything we’re doing, we are pulled in all kinds of directions about what we may need and should have. First (and I’ll be shot for saying this) DO NOT buy something unless you can show that it will make you money…period. Talk is cheap - as they say – and a lot of information out there simply tells you what you should do, how it works, and lets you believe it is just that easy. It’s not. You have to invest time – sometimes a lot of time – to achieve the goal. It assumes you have a certain skill set, even though it says you don’t need it. It gives you false hope that you too can have this success. Have you hit the lottery lately? Probably not. This is no different from that.

In my experience, less than 5% of all the items I’ve purchased provided any financial return: most provided ZERO. (Oh…what I could have done with that money.) My best advise: if you think there is something you absolutely must have, hold off for 72 hours before buying it – and only buy it using money from your business.

Track Spending

Smart Move!

I am the biggest offender – I admit – of not doing this. Boy has that come back to bite me in the b*tt! I see the revenue in my business account grow and then before I know it, I have almost no money. What the heck happened? Typically it’s because I bought things I didn’t need (i.e., non-return on investment itemsdiscussed, above) and I’ve just tossed away my money. I now have a built in email bank alert on my business account. When my money drops below a certain dollar amount, it boinks me on the head to let me know I’ve moved off the path (and into a ditch).

Credit Cards

Don't do it!

Maxing out your credit card(s) is not a good idea – unless you have a deal in the funnel that is guaranteed to pay off. If you have no money coming in, you’ll end up with debt that can potentially kill your business. You’re not a big corporation so you need to cover your expenses with other sources of funds – either your full-time job, spouse’s job, etc.

Home Equity Line

Check with your CPA but this *might* be a worthwhile source of funds for your business. The one downfall is that the value of homes has dropped substantially. My home has dropped by $50k in the past year (and my home is priced in the high 100′s). So, the amount of equity you may have available may be pretty slim.

Those are the highlights I have. If you want to read more, you can read about commons mistakes from a variety of sources: Evan Carmichael, PowerHomeBiz.com, Steve Pavlina, etc.

Eyestrain from looking at the computer monitor is not uncommon. Typically, you can manually adjust the brightness and contrast setting on the monitor itself. You can also make certain adjustments within your operating system.

But, what about insomnia? According to Greg Linch of the Washington Post, “Humans evolved to respond to darkness by producing melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep cycle. But our light-sensitive pineal gland near the center of the brain responds to blue light by suppressing melatonin causing us to wake up.” This now explains why the advice has always been to never keep your TV or a computer monitor on in your bedroom: you won’t be able to fall or stay asleep.

About F.Lux

However, there is something you can do. Stereopsis (www.stereopsis.com/flux/) offers a free software application called F.Lux. This application adjusts the color of your monitor screen based upon the time of day. In other words, f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you’re in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again.

Change Your Location

The first thing you want to do (which is really Step 2) is change your location. Click the Change button and enter your zip code. This will help you to make the proper adjustments based upon where you are in the world. (Likewise, if you take a vacation, etc., you can reset this option for relevancy to your current location.)

Day or Night Setting

Under section 1, the type of lighting you’re under is what is used to gauge where the best setting might be. For example, most offices have fluorescent. Move the Daytime slide to the area that reads Fluorescent. (The Daytime and At Night sliders are independent of each other so only move the applicable slider based upon the time of day.)

Since I work in daylight, I moved the slider from Daylight left to see what would happen. My screen went from an obvious blue to a less bright very faint sepia tone (which is orange/brown). While it took me a few minutes to get used to this change, I found that it was much easier to work. I also felt a lot calmer, which is not a bad thing.

At night, repeat the same process, moving the slider back and forth to see what works best. One thing you’ll notice as you move the bottom slider is that the screen starts to change. This is to simulate how the monitor brightness changes from night to day. (It’s not clear why this is necessary.)

When you have all the settings in place, click Done. That’s it.

Graphics

You should disable F.Lux when you are working with graphics that require true color. F.Lux makes it easy to turn off the feature for an hour or so as you’re working with this type of media. You can see this option in the lower left-hand corner of the F.lux window that reads, “Disable for one hour (for doing color-sensitive work).” Simply click in the checkbox and F.lux is turned off. If you want to enable F.Lux again before the hour is up, click in the checkbox again to remove the checkmark.

I think it takes a bit of testing if you are using a laptop and move around to various lighting sources. However, since your desktop stays in one place, you may find this very useful.

One of the most recent trends I’ve been following is how solopreneurs have little to no money. There are a handful of things they are able to acquire just starting out - e.g., domain name, hosting, etc. However, to really grow their business – especially those in the niche affiliate marketing business - they need support from writers, bloggers, marketers, etc. But, guess what? They have ZERO dollars allocated and/or available for this aspect of their business.

Solopreneur Expenses

When I’m asked how I pay for all my expenses, people don’t believe what I tell them: I sell on Amazon.com. I’ve been doing this since 2004 using only what I have around my house. Typically I sell books on a regular basis but I have also sold a Casio musical keyboard (that was sitting in a closet for 3 years), CD/DVD self-help packages (one of which I had for 10 years), a laptop less than a year old, and the list goes on.

eBay is BAD!

When people think of selling what they have, eBay is the first thing that comes to mind. However, that defeats the purpose if you’re trying to BRING MONEY IN. Why?

eBay charges you a fee to list and relist your item. Amazon charges nothing.

eBay throws your item into a grouping with other items. Amazon lists your item right along their item.

eBay puts everything on the seller to handle such a shipping, payments, etc. Amazon handles the payment for you, gives you shipping credit, and even lets you print the shipping lable. All you have to do is list the time for sale and when it is sold, wrap it up and ship it.

Everyone I know (including you) has books, CBs, and DVDs around their house – either those in near perfect condition or slightly used. YOU CAN SELL THESE ON AMAZON (along with almost anything else they sell).

Funding Your Online Business

As a solopreneur looking to fund your online business, this is an ideal way to make money to help get the work done that you need. For example, hire that coach, get those articles written for you blog, find someone to post for you on social media sites, etc. This past 4 days alone, I made just over $100. This money will pay for some search engine placement, placement that will give me tons of links back to this web site (and for far less than $100).

Amazon Seller Secrets

On http://AmazonSellerSecrets.com, I am currently selling just the Getting Started guide. This is the first of 3 books in the set (with a 4th on the way). If you are reading this posting and are interested in having the whole set, you can purchase it at the discount price of $47. Just contact me and mention this posting for more information.

When I create anything for a client that is going to be sent via email, I spend a good deal of time testing. In fact, I think about 30-40% of my time is all testing. So many service providers fail to understand the importance of this step. Yet, when it doesn’t work, it can negatively affect their image which, in turn, impacts their sales.

The Greeting

There’s nothing more off putting than to receive an email that either (a) has another person’s name, and/or (b) only shows the code where the name should be (e.g., {firstname}). To me, this shows a complete lack of regard for the recipient. If you value your email recipients, make sure you acknowledge them properly.

Content Errors

Well, there is just no excuse for this. There are 500 ways to spell and grammar check a document – either using technology (such as the spell checker in MS Word) or a live human being. At least 60% of the time, I find errors in an email message. Granted, I’m a writer (and, yes, I have done this myself) and I may look at this more closely than the average person may – but that shouldn’t matter. Again, this shows the recipient that you don’t value him/her because you don’t take the time to have your emails checked. If you value your email recipients, respect their intelligence and send them the same quality content you would expect.

Excessive Upselling

Up, Up, Up

I understand that people want to make money, but have you ever tried just sending someone the information they want and not trying to sell them your whole service/product line? People aren’t stupid. They know that if they accept one thing from you, the cycle of emails will begin. There’s no need to shove everything you offer in their face. In fact, the fear of this happening is one of the most common reasons why so many people immediately opt-out as soon as they receive their “free” item (e.g., eBook, special report, etc.). If you value your email recipients, give them the opportunity to make their own decisions about working with you and/or buying your product.

Over Communication

In this case, “more is not better.” The more emails you send to someone, the more likely they are to delete them and unsubscribe. People don’t have time to continually hear from you. In fact, if they want to hear from you that often, they can simply visit your blog! If you value your email recipients, keep your email messages to no more than once a week unless you have something special to say.

Broken Processes

Broken Link

If you ignore everything else on this page, don’t ignore this. For every 5 items I sign up to receive, at least 3 of them have broken processes such as these:

No page displays after you enter your information.

No email is received to confirm your registration and/or ask for email verification

The promised items are not attached and/or no link is provided to download them

There are no clear instructions about what to expect about the process

By far, #2 is the biggest problem. I have sign up for free reports, etc. where is says to “look for an email confirmation,” and nothing arrives. If it happens to arrive too far beyond the date when I requested the information, I just delete it and unsubscribe. If you value your email recipients, test your process from end to end to make sure it works.

Inconsistent Formatting

I know I harp on this subject non-stop, but having the same “look and feel” throughout the entire email chain is VITAL! We all get so many email messages that we can forget what we requested and from whom. The only element that brings them all together is formatting. Make sure you use the same font(s), same colors, etc. Also, don’t switch between HTML and text formatting. If you start in HTML, do all of it in HTML and vice versa. If you value your email recipients, enable them to follow your breadcrumb trail.

Your Challenge

I would like to challenge you with this task: the next time you see one of these occur in someone’s email to you, send a polite note about describing what you received. I have done this many a time and the result was several great relationships. Showing your desire to help others be successful is a win-win for everyone!

As if our lives weren’t filled with enough crap, we are now being overrun with crap on the web. I remember the long gone days when the web was a source for good information. It was used for a company to share information about who

Crap Content Problem #1

Scrabble Anyone?

In a recent issue of Time Magazine, there is an article that mentions Google’s attempt to help filter out the crap on their search engine. They give the example of an article site that paid $7 for a 300-word article on something (I cannot remember what). This type of project ends up being given to someone offshore (meaning in India or the Phillipines) and who does not speak English as a first language. (Don’t get my wrong: I love Filipinos and their culture – but their English is not what results in quality content.)

Crap Content Problem #2

Ads, Ads, Ads

Crap sites run ramped on the web – and it’s not hard to spot them. Here’s a good example: http://dogfoodcouponsite.com/purina-coupons/03/2011/purina-dog-food-coupons-march-2011/. If you look at the content of this site, it’s one small paragraph and the rest is all ads. Even the background looks like a giant add. Also, notice there are no actual coupons on this page – except via the ads. As someone who looks for pet food coupons – as the mama to 2 dogs and 6 cats – this type of site just annoys me to death.

For those of you who do not know this, when you click on one of the ads on a page like this, the person owning the site gets paid money. That’s why the content is so vague, and the ads are so prevalent. The page owner really has no interest in helping you to find what you need: he/she wants to send you around and around, clicking on this, clicking on that so he/she can make money. If only there was a way I could flag this site and report it as “content lacking.”

Crap Content Problem #3

As a writer and someone who provides writing services to others, the content that annoys me the most is those solopreneurs with blogs or web sites in which the content is poor quality. I do understand that most of the time this is because he/she doesn’t have money to spend on getting good quality content written. They end of making very little money because they don’t have enough good content to explain what they are selling. Just as in life, you cannot be all things to all people (in this case, potential clients).

Graphic Artist Skills

When it comes to business, this is especially true. Unfortunately, Virtual Assistance has contributed to the problem. Virtual Assistance does not, nor has it ever, involved one person who can “do all, be all” for anyone. There is always something missing from his/her repertoire of services. As a virtual assistant myself, there are things I cannot do. For example, graphics. You would get higher quality results from a budding artist in 3rd grade! All I can do is refer you to someone else.

In my business, I hire the people I need to help give me the quality I need – whether it be someone to edit/proof my writing, a graphic artist to design my logo or web sites, an expert in marketing, etc. It really comes down to this.

If you’re not a graphic artist, hire one.

If you’re not a writer, hire one.

If you don’t know how to setup a blog, hire someone who does.

If you don’t know how to sell, hire someone who can.

If you don’t know what the h*ll you’re doing, hire someone who can figure it out.

Don’t be a part of the “crap” that hurts everyone. Rise above and be the pinnacle that others strive to immulate. Above all, be willing to work at this – because nothing comes easy.

Have you ever noticed what a cat does? It’s pretty simple: sleep, eat, play, and meow. Just those 4 basic things (and I know I’ve left out the non-basic things such as tearing up furniture, missing the litter box, death screams when going to the vet, etc.).

The Cat’s Business

While I know a cat is not a human being, they do contribute to our lives. (I have 6 of them, I should know!) If they didn’t give us what we needed, we wouldn’t have them.

Like most domesticated animals, they have a 1-way relationship: the only goal is to give to their caregiver(s). That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. Yet look at home much value these animals give back. They are there when you need a hug. They are there when you need to feel needed. They are there when you need someone to play with. They know when we’re working too hard (as shown in the picture on the right). They are there when we need peace and quiet. What we need, they offer. In reality, a cat know’s it business.

To Give and Receive in Business

As with a relationship with a cat, there are just the two sides: give/receive. Yet, is that the way your business is as well? You give “something” so you can receive “something.” Perhaps you give someone golfs and you receive their thanks for helping them to enjoy a sport they love. Maybe you give them advice and you receive the reward of knowing you have helping someone through a problem. Or maybe you give them a service for which you receive money. It’s the last one that bothers me.

What Do You Give?

Think about this: How often - as entrepreneurs – are we asked, “What do you sell/offer?” Yet what if the question was, “What do you give to my business?” The one thing I have always made sure that Affordable Words has given is advice – free of charge. Clients don’t know what they need (well, most clients); thus, they look to you to help give them the write result. In return, I end up with a client who receives what I have to give.

Forget About Receiving

I recently read a book (hunting through office trying to find the name) that talks about the “spirit” of business. Prior to the introduction of computers to the modern world, business owners focused on giving to their clients/customers. Of course, they would receive money (or a chicken, for example) in return. Yet, these business owners knew that 100% of their business was to give to their customers as that’s what would keep them coming back. Even today, businesses trust in the customer to come back – by stocking their stores with inventory. They give us – as shoppers – the freedom to buy what we want, when we want, and how we want. They are stacking their business revenue on the fact that they are giving us what we need.

Change Your Approach

Thank You

I love a good challenge, which is why I love doing research. I must get from point A to point B and find my way through everything in between. As I work my way through the research maze looking for the cheese, I have to continually change my approach. Perhaps at this corner, I need to move in the direction of giving advice. At the next corner, I have to give samples of my work. It is this change that keeps my business interesting, exciting, and worthwhile.

Why not change your approach with the next prospective client you have and do this: focus only on what you can GIVE, and ignore what you may RECEIVE. In fact, imagine you are a volunteer who expects nothing in return. How do you change your approach? What do you say differently? What do you do differently? How do you feel as to what you receive back when doing this? Become the cat in your business who only knows how to give what someone needs.

Before the Internet – in a galaxy far, far away (thank you, Star Wars) – marketing was done much differently. The seller got the attention of the buyer through a variety of means. Seeing a person, face-to-face, as was vital for the insurance sales person. Hearing an advertisement about a product or service. Touching a product to feel the texture, quality, etc. Tasting a fine meal while negotiating an important business deal. Smelling a cup of coffee over a weekly breakfast meeting.

What it really comes down to is how a business works with our 5 senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Let me tell you about a business I visit that speaks to all these senses.

The Heal Center in Atlanta

In the suburbs of north Atlanta is where heaven on earth resides. It’s called, ‘The Heal Center“: a place for both services and education related to healing arts such as massage, reflexology, acupuncture, aromatherapy, etc. The practitioner who birthed this wonderful place is Roz Zollinger – a woman I am blessed to have as a close friend and is truly an angel on earth. Here’s how the 5 senses work with this business.

Sight

From the moment you enter the Heal Center, your eyes can finally rest. There are no bold colors or obtrusive art objects. It’s just a calming experience that allows your visual sense to simply be and take it only what it needs. Wonderful.

Unfortunately, the Internet is 100% based upon sight. Yet, that doesn’t mean we have to push it to the limits of the galaxy. For every 10 web sites I visit, 70% are visually awful, awkward, and antagonistic. I recently had to explain to my friend, Carolina – who’s from South America, the definition of the slang term “in your face.” That’s what the Internet seems to have become: it’s all up in your face. But, that’s the way it has to be because it has none of the other senses (except sound) to garner your attention. That doesn’t mean, however, that web design needs to fall by the roadside: it need to only understand its visitor. What visual greeting can you present to your visitors that allows their eyes to rest?

Sound

Whether it be wonderful music, the gentle flow of water in a fountain, or the sheer quiet, The Heal Center brings you to a place of peace: a place that most of us have long forgotten. There is talking when education is being given – but it’s always words of joy or expressions of feelings shared from the heart.

A web page can offer sound when a visitor arrives. Yet, the use of sound is somewhat haphazard. For those sites with sound, the music starts the minute the page opens. Sometimes there is no option to shut off the sound on the screen. And perhaps the music playing has no relevance to the product/service. What sounds can you play that evokes the feeling you want your visitors to experience?

Touch

There are still businesses were touch is used – such as massage or even the shaking of hands when you meet someone. Nothing can heal the human spirit more than kinds words and a touch. And it is possible to give the sense of touch to someone – without ever touching them. You can find this at the Heal Center just by walking in the door.

Granted, your web site cannot physically touch a visitor, yet it can connect with them. There are many times you read something online or view a video that touches you to the point of laughter or tears, correct? So, touching is possible. How can you touch your visitors with only images, words, and sounds?

Taste

If you’ve every wanted to taste food like never before, The Heal Center is the place to do it. Whether organic or unique, your taste buds are always surprised and awakened at what is offered here. In fact, I have discovered more new foods that are actually healthy for me in this one place alone.

In business, there is a phrase we sometimes use: “give me a taste for what it’s like.” The word “taste” does not mean to literally give a taste. Instead, it ties together words to form a mental image – e.g., “It’s as crisp as an apple just picked from the tree.” If your web product sells candle, you would equate the smell of the candle with the taste associated when eating the apple. Are you offering words to your visitors that show your product/service in a ‘tasteful’ way?

Smell

With aromatherapy as a main service and education offering at the Heal Center, you can only imagine the smells you experience. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to explain. And, if you’re wanting to feel something other than what you carry in, you can easily find a scent to put on your wrist, or spritz in the air that will change your current mood.

We do not have smell-a-vision (from Willy Wonka, I believe) nor do we have smell-a-web. Never going to happen. So you’re left to your own ideas. How can you give your visitor a smell for your business?

Your business should appeal to as many of the senses as possible. Start small, choosing one, and see what happens. You might discover a whole new world of opportunities.

How can I help you be successful today?

When starting a business, one of the first things you generally need is money. It might be $10 for a domain name, or $15 for a domain name plus hosting. No matter how big or small, your business needs money to get up and running.

An online business is a little different. There are certain aspects of a traditional brick and mortar business that remain in place. Likewise, there are new aspects that come into play because of technology. aspect, but you now have a technology aspect thrown in. So, what do these two have in common: THEY BOTH REQUIRE MONEY!

Starting Out

When I first started, I had very little money. However, the faster and larger my business grew, the more money I needed. First it was software. I had to make sure I had legal versions of everything I owned. (This is a requirement – and an ethical and moral obligation - when you’re a corporation.) Then there was the advertising (which, at one point, was over $1,000 a month). Of course, the list goes on.

What frightens me today is that want-to-be online solopreneurs have no idea what they really need to get going. Unfortunately, I’m only one person and I cannot reach every person out there and say “stop” before they spend a dime. Since I cannot do that, I opted to take another approach: show others how to make money to invest in their business without having to spend money.

Options for Making Money

I have always considered myself the ultimate consumer when it comes to a bargain. Now, more than ever, that is especially true. Yet, since 2004, the one way in which I make extra money has not changed: selling on Amazon.com. In fact, the process I use works so well that I even wrote a book about it.

I priced the book so that anyone can afford it. In fact, with 1 or 2 sales, the buyer can typically get his/her money back.

I guarantee that if someone does not make money following my process, I will give them my own money. That’s how much I believe in this process.

I offer a free eBook on ways to save money just for signing up to receive my newsletter with even more money saving/making ideas.

The ebook can be downloaded for the buyer can start right away making money.

I am formatting the eBook so that it can be read by a Kindle an selling it on Amazon.com. (Ironic, huh?)

I have 4 more books in the funnel that contain even more ways to make more money, along with another free eBook.

Where are the Buyers?

As others began asking me about how to find money for their business, I told them what I on Amazon.com. 99.9% of the time, this person said, “when you’re book is ready, I want to buy it”. How many sales do I have right now? ZERO. ZILCH. NADA. NONE. (It takes a lot of guts to admit that.) What happened to all these people who were so interested? Did they win the lottery? Are they now living a life of luxury paid for by a relative? Did they land one customer on a fluke that is yielding them a boat load of revenue? But here’s the question: How is it possible that someone does not want to know how to MAKE MONEY WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY? It just blows the mind.

In the past week alone, I have made close to $100 using my process.
As I was writing this post, I made another $10.

Is it Just Me?

Every day I sit in bewilderment as to why this eBook is not selling (let alone why people aren’t signing up for the *F*R*E*E* eBook). I’ve had several people read all the books in the series (editors/proofreaders) and each has the same response: it’s great and he/she wants to starting using the process right now.

I’m pretty sure it’s not the book quality (considering I’ve written instructional material since I was 18).

I’m pretty sure it’s not the web page (because it’s geared for someone who has a 5th grade or higher reading level – as the eBooks do).

I’m pretty sure it’s not the lack of promotion because I’ve had over 1,000 people visit the web site in a few weeks.

I’m pretty sure that I no longer really give a sh*t if it sells or not!

As a friend of mine, Jeff Herring, says, “GO USE THIS STUFF” (or ”GUTS” as it’s known). So, what’s the problem people?

How can I help you be successful today?

We all have those days. You wonder “why the heck did I get out of bed.” You have no energy to get things done. You have no motivation to even turn on the computer. Everything is just “blah.” If you have a problem with your mojo, here are some things I’ve tried to get things moving again.

Taking a minute or two. Sometimes, the overwhelm is too overwhelming. So, I have to take a few minutes, revisit where I am and where I want to be. Just diving in isn’t going to work.

Reviewing my plan. What is it that I intended to accomplish: today, this week, this month, etc.? Now, what do I have to do to meet my responsibility to my plan?

Considering my resources. Let’s be real: we all cannot do everything. I’m always leary about using others in my business. But, sometimes I simply have to reach out to someone I know and say, “HELP”! Then I trust they will do the best they can with what they have.

Sharing my goals. My husband may not 100% understand everything I do. Yet, explaining it to him is a great way for me to get clarity. Afterall, if he can understand it, then I should be able to!

Making it better. If I’m doing a bunch of things poorly, I’m not going to be able to pat myself on the back for anything. I’d rather do one thing at the highest level possible, and then really celebrate in my success.

Living my motto. At the bottom of every posting, I put my motto (see, below). Why don’t I ever ask myself this question? Afterall, I want to be successful too!

Listening. If the noise is so loud you cannot hear, then how do you expect to be able to speak and be heard? When I find my mind running like a rollercoaster, I listen to others – either in person, on the phone, or via recorded teleseminar. This breaks my cycle and also educates me on new itesm, or gives me a refresher on what I may know.

Becoming accountable. As a solopreneur, it’s have to be accountable to – well – yourself. You need to have someone else doing this. In my case, it’s my husband. I tell him to only let me spend “X” amount of time on something. Like clockwork, when I reach the limit he tells me. Poor man. He’s lucky if I don’t shoot rubber bands at him or shoo him away. (He was only doing as I requested. I’ve now asked him to get “ugly” with me – promising that I won’t “shoot the messenger.”

Sitting back. This provides the biggest result for me. I get in the car, go somewhere, and just sit. No phone. No laptop. No radio. No nothing. Remember when sitting and people watching was popular? I am trying to revive that past time – even if it takes me one step at a time.

How can I help you (and myself) become successful today?

You’ve heard the phrase, “grabbing at everything that moves,” right? It’s sometimes also called “shiny ring” syndrome. For those having this business condition, it translates into a lot of time, energy and money being spent on things that aren’t really necessary (e.g., paid teleseminars/webinars, non-relative memberships, etc.).

I’ve been running my business since 1999 and I’ve been there, done that, and have the empty bank account to prove it. Like you, I’ve run after everything I can – hoping, wishing, praying that it was the easy solution to business success. In reality, nothing comes without a price (even winning the lottery, believe it or not).

When looking at what I really needed, I realized there were only two people: someone to help me find and fulfill my passion, and someone to help me implement the plan.

Advisor #1 – Spiritual

You may think I’m talking about a religious advisor – but I’m not. As a solopreneur, you need the advice and guidance from someone other than yourself. This is to avoid the cannot see the forest for the trees situation. This person is helping you bring your spirit – or passion – to the forefront, while keeping you focused and moving forward. Your spiritual advisor helps you define the path, move down the path avoid any detours encountered.

Advisor #2 – Technical

Only Two?

Some people will scoff at why I only recommend two people. Those people are the ones who really aren’t able (or aren’t willing) to firmly plant their feet in the ground and say, “this is what I want to do and this is how I’m going to get it done”. 99% of the time, this is because they are overwhelmed with input…but more about that in another posting.

During a recent self-improvement class I took, an observation during an exercise revealed that I was not getting any satisfacton for my passion. That analysis reminded me of a few things.

Can You Relate?

When you go into a restaurant, you don’t say, “I want some food.” Instead, you say, “I’ll have a hamburger and fries.” If you don’t specify what you want, your meal selection will be made by the person serving you. Perhaps you end up with an omelet and black coffee – which is not what you really want. However, because you have not clearly state that your passion was for the hamburger and fries, you don’t get the satisfaction of enjoying the food you really wanted.

The Menu of Business

A Feng Shui master I follow recently shared details about her move. She stated that her house had not sold – which is pretty remarkable when you know that if anyone’s house should sell, it would be that of a Feng Shui master. She and her husband were undecided on two locations for their new home. It was her realization that she needed to know where she wanted to go before she could leave. Once she made the decision to move to a specific town, her house sold.

When I started my business – Affordable Words, Inc. in 1999 - it was all I knew. There were no big decisions I had to contemplate. Not an endless supply of eBooks and teleclasses and webinars and seminars to attend. In fact, without all this conglomeration of input, I quite easily made the decision to quit my full-time job to start my company. Talk about passion! I successfully ran Affordable Words until 2004 – then everything came to a standstill. I ended up selling our home, moving across the country for 6 months, coming back to Georgia, finding a new home, suffering one illness after the other, and the list goes on and on. At this point in time, my passion began to fade. As a result, I was getting no satisfaction from anything in my life.

Where Did You Come From?

My life had become the same as that unclear order at a restaurant, or a house move with no destination. I didn’t know where I was going, so I kept wandering down a path to – well – nowhere.

Ventura, California

I grew up in Southern California where the mountains meet the sea. (Yes: it really does look like this.) The feelings I have for this time of my life are priceless. Life’s focus was so clear and refined, and the world offered nothing but majesty and beauty. Where did that go?

As a business owner, at what point did I get caught up in so much “stuff” that the passion with which I pursued my dream is now not yielding the satisfaction I want or need?

The Elephants

For me (as it is for many, I presume) my business had become a circus act. Finding a passion to focus on was equivalent to juggling all these balls in the air and hoping none of them dropped. When one did, I had to pick up another ball and start over again. Thus, the circus act continued.

Tara and Bella

I call this a circus act because that’s what it feels like. There are so many things going on that it’s hard to focus on just one. The solution is to go to the circus knowing which act you want to see most. For my husband, it would be the elephants.

Elephants are his whole world. He surrounds himself with them. He thinks about them. He loves them so much that we are willing to spend money for both of us to go to an Elephant Sanctuary for a weekend just to interact with these animals. I can only imagine what a magical experience that will bring…being one-on-one with elephants. His (our) passion for the elephant delivers tremendous satisfaction.

Finding the Road

I am now focusing my passion on one item: this writing business. As part of this passion, I am returning to how it grew when I first started out. This includes seeking out opportunies via the web, working to get attention to my business via the search engines, and helping others to turn their personal passion into business satisfaction. No more buying this telseminar, watching that webinar, buying this eBook, etc. I didn’t have those before…and I don’t need them now. Follow my intuition and instinct – as the elephant does – is all I need.

If you are not getting the results you seek, return to the passion that started it all. Then look at where you are now. How far have you deviated off the path? What happened to the big elephant in the room that was your whole focus? Mine is writing…today, tomorrow, and always.

How can I help you be successful today?

So much to do, so little time. If that is true in your world, then here is a list of the 10 things you can do to promote your business.

Networking

Tell anyone and everyone what you are doing. Tell relatives because they love to “talk up” their family members who are doing something on their own. Tell former coworkers and bosses in case they ever need your services. Make yourself a walking, talking billboard for your business.

URL

Make your website URL like your middle name. When you’re on calls and asked to introduce yourself, give your name and your web site address. Do the same at meetings or business functions. Make it part of your “blurb” about yourself.

Press Release

Formally announce what you’re doing via a press release. Send it out to local online media or anywhere else you think the information can be valuable. For example, if you’re offering a local service catering to consumers who grocery shop, put it up on the free billboards they offer.

Write Articles

Share your knowledge. It is the best way to show others what you know and well as what you can do. And, if you’re reading this, then you know that EzineArticles.com is a good example of where you might place these articles. Do your research about article submission sites and get those articles posted.

Got Blog?

If no, then you should. They are easy to create, easy to manage, and as long as you update them frequently, they help to get your message out there. For every entry, be sure to use the keywords you associate with your business throughout the article.

Spread the Ezine

While you may think you need an email list in order to do this, you don’t. Your electronic newsletter can be sent to anyone. You can post a link to it on your Facebook page or Tweet about it. The goal is to get as many people to see it as possible so it brings them to your site to want more.

There is a TV commercial that says only 26% of the people watching the commercial even know about tweeting (or Twitter.com). You better not be part of that 26%. You need to get online and start sharing what you do with others. If you’re not sure how to tweet, there are lots of free tutorials out there.

Merge Forces

Bartering is very big now and there are probably lots of people that you can find who are willing to cross-promote your business and theirs. Search out these people, simply ask if you can do some things together, and go from there. There was a commercial in the 70′s (I think I watch too much TV) for a hair product that coined a phrase about “telling a friend and she’ll tell a friend and so on and so on.” That’s 100% true. It’s strange how someone may remember what you do in the middle of a conversation with someone else.

Rewards

Let people know that if they send you business, they’ll get something in return. Come up with something that does not cost you money: e.g., a free one-month membership in your program or a small discount based upon the amount of business you receive from the referral. Make everyone in the world your own little sales force. (In the online world, these people are called, “affiliates.”)

Announcements

Similar to a press release, send out announcements about what you are doing to people who either don’t have email or live out of area that you cannot see face-to-face. Remember: everyone knows someone who lives somewhere else so that college friend who lives 3000 miles away may have a friend who lives in your immediate area.

How can I help you be successful today?

I have been using Feng Shui since 1992 – before it was “the thing.” I found a single-page article in a woman’s magazine and initially thought it would be a compliment to my decorating. I had no idea, however, it would be so much more than that. Here, almost 20 years later, I still use Feng Shui and I continue to grow my knowledge – and my business.

Feng Shui and Focus

What does this have to do with your business? These are the highlights and the areas that can bring you great success.

Talk less, write more. 2011 is the year to be quiet. If you have a message to share, put it in writing – as articles, marketing materials, press releases, whatever.

Only two. One of my favorite lines is from a Bill Cosby skit in the 70′s about Noah and Ark. As the animals are coming onto the ark, Noah has to keep saying, “Only two. Only two.” (Had something to do with the rabbits!) This is true for you: keep away from 3-person partnerships. The symbol of the triangle (3) can only cause problems. Stick to working 1-on-1 with someone.

Women Entrepreneurs. This is great year for you – especially if you’re a writer, speaker, in public relations, etc.

Get it in Writing. If you are happy with a smile and a hand shake, DON’T DO IT! Legal contracts are a must do this year to avoid legal disputes. Be sure to read the fine print on everything, and don’t worry about offending someone. (If a client doesn’t want to do business with you without a contract, move on.)

Go International. Extend your reach beyond where you are. International associations – especially with women – will be prosperous.

Woman in Sales. If you’re into affiliate marketing, stick with products/services by woman. They can lead you down a fruitful path.

Future Thinking. If you’re not typically a think-ahead type of person, become that now. Focus on developing a strategic 1-10 year plan – then begin implementing it. In this plan, be sure to have multiple streams of income.

Creative. If you’re someone who does something creative using your hands (writing, for example), focus on that. In fact, if you have a book you have always wanted to publish, now is the time.

As you can see, Feng Shui isn’t only about colors and candles and objects. You can use it to make your business a success in a variety of areas.

How can I help you be successful today?

For years I have found that giving advice away for free is a means to “woo” prospect clients. However, what worked 10 years ago doesn’t work today. Free advice is everywhere and, while the inclination may be to give it, where does it cross the line?

If you feel you should be paid, then you should. We all know when we reach this point. It might be just one more question or one more conversation where we feel uncomfortable answering. This is because the requestor has moved into the category where he/she should be paying for advice. Unfortunately, if you have not established quidelines for what free information includes and what it doesn’t, you’ll be out of luck trying to get money out of this person.

If you are offered something in exchange. This is called bartering and I rarely do this. In fact, I will only do it if I am 100% sure that my return on investment is going to more than worthwhile. Generally, this is going to be based upon the revenue I can potentially generate. If you aren’t going to get back as much as you give, or you don’t have a defined bartering agreement in place, don’t operate your business in this manner.

ARGH!

If you don’t value what you do, no one else will either. This is a very common theme right now with solopreneurs. (Again, shiny ring syndrome.) Men are very good at not doing this. They stick to their guns. Woman, on the other hand, will give away the farm instead of just selling the pig. In other words, you diminish your value when you give away too much. You enable the recipient to request more and more and the result is you get more and more pissed at yourself. You are the loser in this scenario.

If you have a flat fee you can charge, tell the world. For a long time, I avoided telling anyone what I charged. Why? Because I was too afraid the competition would find out. Then I realized that the more I charged that was in keeping with my experience, knowledge, etc., the higher quality of clients of I found. My gut instinct really does know what’s fair; it’s my brain that takes over and screws all that up. If I undercharge, I’m the one who pays the price (bad pun).

If you offer a solution other than yourself, you can avoid the awkwardness. With there being so much free information available via search engines, direct others to take advantage of that resource. How often to you have to search for an answer because you understand the boundaries? Probably a lot…and you have no issue doing this. You are not the only person on the planet that has the answers: remember that!

If you ask for money upfront, you’ll weed out the wanted vs. unwanted clients. This relates to item #1, above. Why are you afraid to tell others about a consulting fee and what that includes? When I was doing primarily technical writing projects, I provided a small sample (because the potential ROI was huge), then I gave a detailed quote where I factored in consulting/project management time. My time is valuable and, honestly, I’m at the point in my solo business career where my time is even more precious. So, if you ask, be prepared to pay for an answer.

Anyone who’s a gardener or designer can tell you they know the benefits of using items in threes – whether it’s 3 plants together or 3 vases together. (This can apply to anything that is an odd number – e.g., 5, 7, 9, etc., except the number ’1′. For example, here’s a good article about the 7 elements for creating a product review.)

The more “creative” types prefer to just let things flow. That’s OK. However, those with a specific focus (and not a lot of time) prefer to have a guideline they can follow – and that’s where this rule comes into play. In fact, it even allows the non-writer to become a writer (of sorts).

This rule of 3 also works amazingly well when it comes to writing – and formatting. Here are some of the most common ways in which use the rule of 3′s is applied to writing.

Headings

Limit your article, ebook, or whatever to 3 headings – or chapters – only. Choose the 3 major elements you absolutely want to cover and then add the applicable content under these 3 headings.

Subheadings

Under each heading, have only 3 subheadings. These would be the main areas of focus that fall under the heading.

Bullet Points

Limit yourself to 3 bullet points, and use the “FAB” approach for these bullets points.

Features. What is the feature you’re talking about?

Advantages. What is the advantage to using this feature?

Benefits. What are the overall benefits attained by using this feature?

A feature should fall in line with your subheading. For example, if I were writing an article about document formatting, one of my subheadings might regarding colors. My 3 bullets points would be something like those below.

Colors Selections for Your Document

Colors Adds Life to Just Plain Text

Colors Tie Everything Together

There may be plenty of other things to talk about for this subheading, but these are the most common that I feel (as the writer and author) that the reader should know about.

Images

I’ve seen people go wild with images. Not only is too much too much, but the wrong images can spoil the item as a whole. Make the commitment to use only 1 image per heading OR subheading. No more, no less. Then (and maybe more importantly) use the same type of image throughout. Sticking with our discussion about colors, refer to the details, below.

Poor Image Selections

Here are the 3 problems with this collection of images:

The images are all different styles: one is obviously in a store, the next is a piece of clip art, and the third is a background-less photo. Separately, they’re fine. Together they look as if they were not well thought out.

The message of using the color wheel is going to be a bit hard to identify – mainly because the first picture barely shows the colors, and the third picture is not in the shape of a wheel.

The feeling of each does not promote one of cohesiveness and continuity. The first is a little tired looking, the second is pretty upbeat and positive, and the third – well – it makes you think about the dishes you have to do!

(There could be a fourth mention here about the difference in size. However, I think that’s obvious and not as important so I have opted not to make it part of my bulleted list of 3.)

Good Image Selections

Here are the 3 reasons why this collection of images works.

The are all the same type of image – e.g., drawings done digitally.

They all have words in the image somewhere.

They have the same look/feel and show continuity – even if on different pages.

By sticking with the Writing Rule of 3′s, you’ll find that every aspect of your document is much easier to create, saving you a lot of time while giving you results that’s top notch.

One note: For those of you who are grammar fantics, I am perfectly aware that using the number 3 is not correct, and that it should be the word three spelled out. I have chosen to use the number to emphasize my point.

How can I help you be successful today?

Have you come to the decision that you need help?

Are you unsure about what you need to know to get this help?

Would you like someone to take out all the guesswork and help you make the “write” decision?

Let me get straight to the point. To choose a virtual assistant who is SAFE to hire, be sure you have investigated these four components.

Skills | Availability | Flexibility | Expense

Start out by writing an affirmative statement that describes the outcome you seek. For example: “I am in the process of finding an assistant who has advanced skills in planning and writing, who’s available on weekends with flexibility to work some nights, and will accept payment by the project and based upon my budget.” This solidifies the need in your mind as sets your search intention.

Creating Your Virtual Assistant Help Wanted Description

The next step is to write up a detailed description that you will use during your search. This is what you will post on web sites and/or give to prospective assistants. It should answer all these questions.

WHO are you? Explain a little about your business and you personally.

WHAT do you need? A basic list of what you need help with.

WHEN this will happen? Indicate when the position starts (e.g., next week, month, etc.).

WHERE will the assistant work.? If this has to be someone local, you must specific this. However, you’re probably going to work with someone virtually – so state that here.

HOW will the process flow? Describe what equipment this person needs, how you will communicate back and forth (Instant Messenger of some type, phone, email), etc.

WHY are you seeking help? The statement here should be representative of the goals you’re trying to achieve – e.g., having more time to work on a book deal, looking for an assistant to assume a bigger role for the long-term, etc.

With your description in hand, determine how you’re going to market this position. Use any form of social media or online free posting sites that are safe. Be sure to put it on your web page. Post it anywhere you think your ideal assistant might look.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you post on something that’s in the mainstream, be sure to not disclose your email address. Create a web-based email account just for this task and direct people to that email.

Reviewing Virtual Assistant Submissions

As your search gets underway, and you begin receiving submissions, go with your gut instinct and first impression. You know the saying, “if it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it’s probably a duck”? That applies here. If this person – in writing – doesn’t immediately click, delete the email. Set some criteria for reviewing. For example, if you’re looking for a writer, is the email/resume riddled with spelling and grammatical errors? If you’re looking for someone to create items that have some physical aspects (formatting, graphics, etc.), indicate you want samples up front. There are far more people than jobs out there: this means you have the freedom to search as long as necessary and will have a wide array of choices.

The one strange thing you might encounter is people begging for a job. While the person is well intentioned and may have the skills, realize this person’s focus is MONEY. What does that mean? Either he/she will ask for a retainer (don’t pay a retainer – ever) or will rush through a project to get paid. This just screams trouble.

Keep reviewing the information that comes in, nixing the ones that are a definitive “no,” and categorizing the rest (i.e., yes, maybe, possibly, etc.).

Watch for more information on this topic in an upcoming post.

How can I help you be successful today?

I’ve heard people talk about trackbacks and pingbacks…yet I have never been able to understand how they truly work. Thus, I went on the hunt to find some information.

In my search, I came across a great web site that explained this process in an easy-to-understand format. I liked the fact that it gives you a variety of information – especially when it comes to a) the version of WordPress you are using, and b) how to find a task in WordPress. (As an instructional designer, I found this to be an excellent example of how to properly write instructional information.)

While I’m still experimenting with trackbacks/pingbacks, I think the blog entry on the Optiniche web site was highly beneficial.

P.S. This posting was to see if I was able to do the trackbacks/pingbacks successfully. Just as the tutorial said, it worked!

Ever had a client where you just think, “What the heck is the problem? Is it me, or is it them?” It can actually be a combination of both of you. To make the relationship as successful as possible, it’s important to identify the type of client you’re working with (or considering working with).

The Disciplinarian. This client gives you a list of tasks and due dates. He/she wants to make sure things are done, done on time, and done right. When you have success, there is a pat on the head and an “atta boy/girl.” So, what’s the problem? He/she is going to already have a price in mind regardless of the work involved, and will also expect more from you while being unwilling to pay for this additional work.

The Denier. This client ignorese anything you say. You may offer advice about something, or share your knowledge about the best say to get things done. But what you say falls on deaf ears. This client feels that his/her way is the only way and either do it that way, or they’ll find someone else. The red flag for this type of client is if he/she says, “I’ve used X number of people before and no one got it right.”

The Nervous Wreck. Typically, you’re dealing with someone very new to their endeavor. He/she doesn’t know a lot, has problems making decisions, and seems to flutter from one idea to the other. You can easily intimiate this client with basic information. You have two choices: either acknowledge that you understand the fear and you want to help, or explain that another resource might be a better fit.

The Tester. Of all the clients out there, this one is the most degrading. He/she may be nice, easy to work with, etc. However, the goal is to pick your brain dry (without paying for the information) by enticing you to work on a project with either one specific focus, or a bunch of small components in a bigger project. You will not make very much money from this client since his/her goal is to gather data and then use it for something else (typically to use it as leverage with another resource).

The Joker. For this client, everything will be laughable and a potential joke. For example, if you suggest an investment in something vital to success, he/she will laugh it off as if you have no idea what you’re taking about…and it’s absurd. This client has no confidence in him/herself and shows that by expression in a non-business form. You need to turn down the business.

The Blamer. It’s never his/her fault: it’s always someone else that screwed up, this other resource was clueless, or there was money antics going on. You hear nothing but whining and complaining. This client can never be pleased – no matter what you do, or how hard you try.

The Quick Fix. Can you drop what you’re doing and do it now? If not, this client isn’t for you. He/she has gotten backed into a corner – either because someone else dumped them because things got out of control, or the deadlines were too stiff. Thus, this client has wasted time and is now looking for someone who wants to fix it. If you accept this client, stick to your guns about your schedule as well as your rush fee. Plus, get your money upfront – in full.

The Judge. If you could see this client, he/she would be sitting behind a big desk, not making eye contact, and waiting for you to slip up. (Watch a court proceeding – specifically the judge – and you’ll see what I’m talking about.) You need to fly right with this client or you’ll get “overruled” on everything: the process, the communication, the price, the result. He/she may seem to be reasonable and fair, but that’s because the final say is his/hers.

The Warm Fuzzy. Everything greats. Everything is wonderful. Aren’t you terrific. Aren’t I terrific. This client is all about the emotional aspect of the work. He/she (and it’s typically a woman) just lets things move along, happy to be part of the process. This client will be more worried about the burden placed on you and as a result, things will drag on and on. Payments will be few and far between – if at all.

In my experience, about 35% of my clients are one or more of these. The most typical: the Denier, Blamer and/or Quick Fix (and all of these were men). The choice is yours if you want to try to work with one of these types…but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

How can I help you be successful today?

Probably one of the greatest disservices you (we) can do for a clients/customer is to place pressure on him/her to take action.

Today, I received a link to a report from a web site for two chiropractors who “claim” they have the cure for Fibromyalgia sufferers. As someone who has a mild case of Fibromyalgia, I like to hear about what others are doing to make headway in this area. From a business standpoint, I like to review what others are offering. To say I was horrified at what these doctor’s are offering is putting it mildly.

First, they had a sales page. I’ve never seen any other doctor do this. It was nothing but sales, sales, sales. Second, their page was not written from the perspective of a doctor trying to help. Instead, it was SCREAMING at me (using too much red text) that I had to do something…and they were the solution. Finally, they shoved so much information down my throat that I almost couldn’t finish reading the page because I was so agitated.

Here are some of the main highlights that really bothered me.

You do not know how I feel - because you don’t have fibromyalgia.

I don’t care there are 15 million people who have this condition. I’m interested in ME – and ME only.

If you could not find “anyone who was really helping fibromyalgia sufferers”, why should I think that you can help?

If you were “average doctors” several years ago, how could you have found a solution in such a short period of time (when no one else has)?

You’re only going to offer me a discounted price if I schedule in the next 2 weeks? I have never had a health care provider tell me that if I didn’t see him/her in the next two weeks, the fee would be higher.

There is no mention of insurance acceptance on this page…and that’s because you’re chiropractors – and most insurance companies don’t cover this type of specialized care except by an MD.

I could go on and on about all the other things that make me NOT want to take action.

So, if your goal is to make someone take action, does your service or product answer these questions?

Is my focus on the individual who visits my site (instead of being all about me and how great and wonderful I am)?

Am I sharing too much non-relevant information that is just going to confuse the reader?

What can I offer – at no charge – that demonstrates my sincere interest in helping someone?

Can I convey my message in a short, concise manner (versus over 4,000 words like these two gentlemen had on their site)?

Does it appear that I am more interested in helping you than I am about selling you a product/service?

Put yourself in the reader’s shoes, and write exactly what YOU would want to read. Minimize the sales pitch and be happy with the fact that you’ve helped someone else. The return you receive will be far greater.

How can I help you be successful today?

I recently saw an exceptional video by Paul Evans, a motivational speaker whom I had the chance to see in person back in August. During this video, Paul talked about how we – as someone providing a product/service – should challenge what others are saying.

This is similar to what he said (and based upon the notes I took):

Stand up and go to bat for your market (“market” being the folks to whom you are offering your product/service).

Create a product that is better than the products that people are buying that are misleading them.

Too many products make promises on which they don’t deliver – and the purchasers doesn’t get the results they want and/or expect. They (being YOU) end up wasting their money by believing what is really a “fake promise.” RISK YOUR REPUTATION on what you offering.

Many people are coming to the same conclusion that I am: they (we) are tired of getting a product (either at no cost or with an investment) that includes a no-risk guarantee like this:

You can try out this product for 30 days and if you are not satisfied with the design, functionality, etc., you can get a refund immediately.

Notice how this does not say, “get the results I got” or “get the results I’m promising.” You get to spend – or really waste – 30 days trying to make this work and will more than likely discover that it doesn’t. Sure: you can get your money back; however, you’re back at square one.

I’m going to give you two examples that I recently received emails about (and if this people get their panties in a wad, too bad):

http://bloggingforprofits.info/vip/EasySqueezePro/. I tried this product and while it’s pretty good, look at what you’re creating? A page that doesn’t actually what you don’t want to do: promise someone results without sticking your neck out and saying, “I guarantee this.”

http://www.the-profit-platform.com/register.php. Sure, you can find out why “95% of all Internet marketers are failing,” yet what good does that do you? You’ll probably get all the details about what these folks are doing wrong and what they should have done different. Great. Now how do you make that happen? Hope the stars, moon, and sun align perfectly?

The above are two typical examples of what you’ll find on 99% of all sales web pages. I don’t know about you, but this is NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE for me. So, what am I doing? I’m following the advice Paul Evans gave above about staking my reputation on the line for my product.

As someone who is going to be offering a product for sale (how I made a money selling on Amazon.com), I looked at my product sales page and said, “Am I willing to stake my reputation and offer a guarantee on this product?”. The answer is YES. With my product, I guarantee that if someone lists a single item for sale, even at $.01 cent, he/she will make money. I know this because of my experience and expertise doing this (and I have the records to prove it).

It’s my obligation, as a writer, to ensure my clients are living up to their promises as well. If they don’t, then I won’t accept them as a client. Now, I’m sure you asking…

…am I tossing money out the window? YES!

…am I going to upset the writing community by challenging my peers to do this as well? OF COURSE!

…am I willing to do this because I place more value on my clients success than I do on making money? ABSOLUTELY!

At the end of most of my blog posts and/or product/service pages, you will see this phrase:

How can I help you be successful today?

If I cannot help you be successful in what you do, then I have no business accepting your business.

One of the things I enjoy doing is blogging – both for myself and others. I love finding interesting blogs to read (to enhance my own knowledge and skills) as well as fun blogs to participate in.

When I blog for others, I take on their persona somewhat. I blog as if I were them – under their name, etc. – yet I am still me. I use my language, my personality, my opinions, etc. Honestly, this has never bothered anyone for whom I do this. That’s probably because I am able to step into the role of salesperson for their product or service – as if it were my own.

Blogging Teams

I’m not entirely sure where this ability came from: I just seem to have always had it. I consider it a tremendous blessing and one that has served me well. Yet, I’ve recently found that people are using blogging teams to help their clients – a concept that really applies to the corporate world (because of their business volume, I’m assuming).

These folks may blog on a client’s behalf, yet they must have a very high level of knowledge, language skills, etc., to ensure the level of professionalism that client needs. I have seen people blog that I would never let near my stuff, while there are others I would hire in an instant to do it for me.

Blogging That’s Personal

When selecting a blogger/blogging team to help you with marketing your product/service, you need to be sure that he/she/they are able to gain a personal connection with what you do. This includes your tone, your message format, the goals, and the nuances that make what you offer unique. Without this personal touch, you risk losing that conversation factor though backlinks that you’re hoping to get through the blogs you post on.

When making a selection, ask someone to show you at least 10 blog posts on a variety of topics and sites so you can see the full spectrum of their capabilities. Without knowing what they can offer, you risk getting stuck with a bad image and a poor ROI.

As a writer since the age of 15 (and now 50, ugh), I have a broad knowledge of a large number of topics – everything from Decorating to Finances. Unlike other writing service providers, I do not have to do extensive research. That doesn’t mean I don’t do research: it’s generally not required.

It seems that more and more I’m finding that those who come to me to help them with their writing needs have an idea in mind — but it really doesn’t fit their goals. They say, “I want to do this,” yet – in reality, they really need to be doing something else.

The number 1 reason I believe this problem exists is not knowing to whom you are selling. When you send an email to someone, you send information specifically for that person. You wouldn’t write a letter to your mom and write it as if it was for your boyfriend, would you? Of course not. Yet, when it comes to business, this whole concept seems to fly out the window.

Having a 30 -year background in the writing and training field, I was taught very young (age 18) to know my target audience. (This is one reason why I’m able to write software user guides in my sleep.) As a child, I was taunted by other kids since I was smart and just a little “chunky.” Fat people cannot be smart, right? As a result, I understood the concept of being understanding of other people’s feeling, situation, etc. I’ve always been able to put myself in “their shoes,” and see things from their perspective. I consider this to be a wonderful gift.

In my Six-Figure Secrets class, the first thing we do is determine who we want to ‘sell’ to. Who is the person(s) that is going to want to buy your wares? This question is the basis for everything else you do. Without knowing this, you cannot determine what you’re going to offer, how you’re going to price it, nor how you will market it.

Another factor you have to consider is two-fold: is the buyer purchasing something that makes them money? Here is the perfect example. With Affordable Words, someone pays me money to provide them a service. This service may/may not yield them a cash return. It’s more of a “means to an end.” On the flip side, my Amazon book allows someone to pay money to learn a method to make money. This is a HUGE difference in a purchasing decision.

When you factor the last bit of information in when thinking about your target buyer, it should make it very clear. My Affordable Words services have to be very focused. I don’t target consumers per se, but rather businesses, solopreneurs, peers, etc. I have to show them the ROI and that this is a long-term investment towards their success. My Amazon book, however, is 100% focused on consumers – regardless of who they are and/or what they need. So my approach is going to be to show them by spending $X dollars they will make their money back almost immediately.

One last thing: I know the term is “target audience“; however, when I ask someone who their “targer BUYER” is, it seems much easier to overcome this hurdle and move the process forward faster.

How can I help you be successful today with your TARGET BUYER?

PayPal catches fraud on my business account and stops it before it happens.

Considering I’ve had my PayPal account for at least 8 years, I’ve never had any fraud with it. However, this past Thursday, I got an email for at $115 payment sent from my account to someone in Vietnam. Obviously, I didn’t make this purchase/payment.

The good news is that PayPal saw this activity and shut down my account before anything else could happen. They sent me an email with alerts, telling me to change this, that and the other thing. I field the dispute and within 24 hours, they ruled in my favor and the money was back in my account.

The one thing I learned from this is that the more you’re trying to marketing your site, the closer you need to pay attention to making sure you change up your login information frequently. I now have a reminder in my calendar to change my password on a few important sites every month.

Books – especially eBooks – are one of the best ways to get your message to the masses. They can be long, short, funny, or serious. You can give them away free or change a few dollars for them.

Writing

I can provide original content – either based upon an outline you provide, or from scratch doing the research, etc. If you’re on a limited budget, I typically suggest that you provide a detailed outline to minimize the time it takes for you to receive the finished product.

If you plan to give an eBook away free (perhaps as part of a list building campaign), you’re better to stick with under 10 pages. If you find that you’re really pushing beyond this, it may be that you’re providing more information than is needed, and forgetting the goal: to get the reader to want your services.

Pricing

Any topic (except Rocket Science and a few others)

$0.10 cents per word ($25 minimum)

$1 per image (1 relevant image per page in appropriate format)

Standard legal copyright page included

Table of Contents for documents over 50 pages

Index for documents over 100 pages

$10 for original cover

$10 for original sales page at beginning/end of book

Includes editing and proofreading services (see below)

Files are returned to you are in MS Word and Acrobat PDF format

Note: If you want a few samples pages for your particular document, there is a flat fee of $15.

Editing

Most people are not writers (although there are those you ‘think’ they are). However, you may have a great idea, have moved it onto paper, but that’s where it ends. That’s ok. Editing of eBooks is the most common request I get. And let’s be clear about what editing is: it is more than proofreading. Editing involves reading the entire document for content: how it flows, how it’s organized, how well it’s explained. It requires a writer who’s a true editor.

Pricing

$5 per page

$1 per image (typically 1 per page)

$10 for original cover

Includes proodreading services (see below)

Provided source file to me can be either MS Word or Acrobat PDF.

I can convert a PDF file into a Word document and retain about 95% of the formatting.

I do not question the copyright on the material. (In other words, if you send me content that is not yours, this is your responsibility.)

If you want me to “flip” the content so that it does not violate copyright laws and it becomes original to you, that falls under the Editing services/pricing, above.

Final file is returned to you as MS Word and Acrobat PDF

Proofreading

This term began when the printing press was in existance. Employees would read the ‘proof’ to make sure there were no mistakes. That’s exactly what proofreading is today – almost. When I proofread your document online (usually in MS Word), you will see the changes I’ve made and you can choose to accept/reject those changes. I can even use a proofreading tool that is a little more advance then the Track Changes features provides. I can also proofread your material by hand, using traditional proofreader’s markings. (This is a long, lost skill – let me tell you!)

Pricing

$2 per page using MS Word Track Changes

$5 per page for manual changes with proofreader’s markings

If you have need for something not mentioned above, please contact me for a custom quote.

How can I help you be successful today?
